Risk of Rain 2
In conjunction with my last post, I thought that I’d maybe try to go beyond the scope of being a boring ol’ fart that just writes about software engineering, sure I love software engineering, but there’s a lot more to me than just my career. Anyhow, this is the first of any reviews that I’ve done, so please be gentle, I appreciate that this may be of a low quality or whatever but without further ado….

Risk of Rain 2, after playing the first one, I found it somewhat entertaining, but in the second version of the game, I find that Hopoo Games have really stepped up their game, no pun intended. I find that the general mechanics of the game are relatively simple, you essentially have to survive in a world where an endless number of enemies try to attack you & along the way you can collect new equipment to improve your abilities to survive in such a world.

When you take into account that this game is currently in early access, it just makes me excited to think about the finished product. In theory it’s a simple idea, but the execution of this idea is honestly phenomenal, I’ve not played a game like this in quite some time, even then, I’ve never enjoyed a game in this genre to this extent. My own opinion aside, even taking a look at the Steam reviews, there have been ~2,500 negative reviews in comparison to over 70,000 positive reviews. Risk of Rain 2 was release ~March time in 2019, generally, the reviews everywhere, not just steam but PC gamer, Metacritic & so on, all generally have all round very good reviews.
Personally I have no negative feedback for Risk of Rain 2, although I would like to see a couple of features added, such as the ability to specify how likely it is to see drones & crates appear on a given map. I have no idea how hard that would be to implement, but I would love to see a feature like that just to add that extra level of customisation to the game.
All in all I enjoy this game so much that just after an hour or so of game-play, I find that it relieves me of stress, I honestly feel more relaxed after playing this game. Which is kinda crazy when you consider how much is actually going on once you get to the ‘hahahaha…’ difficulty. There’s so much going on that, eventually you can’t make head or tail of what’s on the screen, it’s madness, but brilliant! Honestly, I’d give this game a 10/10, I hear that some players have had a bad experience when playing multiplayer, apparently the servers have been experiencing some downtime, thankfully I’ve not had such problems happen to me.
